Bridging the Gap in Spine Care:
Transforming Lives in India’s North-East

The Spine Foundation expands its spine camps to reach out to even more people.

SPINE DISORDERS ARE a growing public health concern in North-East India, affecting thousands of people who struggle with chronic back pain, herniated discs, scoliosis, and spinal tuberculosis. Despite the rising burden of these conditions, specialized spinal care remains inaccessible in many regions, forcing patients endure years of pain without proper treatment.

THE SPINE FOUNDATION’S LIFECHANGING INITIATIVES

In response to this urgent need, The Spine Foundation (TSF) recently conducted spine camps in Silchar, Assam, and Purulia, West Bengal, providing free consultations, physiotherapy, and surgeries for patients with severe spinal conditions. These camps not only offered expert medical interventions but also raised awareness about early detection and preventive care. At Rotary Hospital in Purulia, TSF’s spine camp took a comprehensive approach, ensuring patients received meticulous check-ups, surgical consultations, and treatment recommendations. By making spine care accessible to those who need it most, the camp empowered individuals and families to take control of their health.

ADDRESSING CHALLENGES IN SPINE HEALTH

Silchar, in particular, faces severe gaps in spine care infrastructure. Patients must travel long distances to cities like Guwahati or Kolkata for specialized treatment, which often leads to delayed diagnoses and worsened conditions. Recognizing this, TSF is exploring the establishment of a spine treatment center in Silchar, aiming to provide advanced care closer to home. The shortage of spine specialists, lack of diagnostic tools, and high treatment costs remain major obstacles in both regions. Many families cannot afford spinal surgeries, making
free camps like these a lifeline for those in need.

MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE

During TSF’s free spine camp in Silchar, three life-changing surgeries were performed, restoring mobility and independence to patients who had long suffered in silence. Similarly, in Purulia, patients who had never received spinal care before finally had the opportunity to consult specialists and begin treatment. These initiatives are not just about medical intervention—they are about giving people hope. By expanding access to quality healthcare, training local healthcare workers, and leveraging telemedicine, TSF continues to bridge the gap in spinal healthcare across underserved communities.

THE MEN BEHIND THE MOVEMENT

The latest warrior to join The Spine Foundation’s (TSF) mission is Dr. Suman Dhar, a dedicated spine surgeon with a deeprooted passion for serving underserved communities. Born in Udaipur, Tripura, Dr. Dhar embarked on his medical journey by earning his MBBS degree from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bangalore. His commitment to orthopedic excellence led him to pursue an MS in Orthopaedics at MGM Medical College, Aurangabad. Driven by a desire to specialize in complex spinal conditions, Dr. Dhar trained extensively with TSF, gaining invaluable experience in treating spinal disorders in resource-limited settings. To further enhance his expertise, he pursued advanced fellowships in Scoliosis Surgery and Complex Cervical Spine Surgery at the University Hospital Wales and University Hospital Llandough in Cardiff, UK. His extensive training and international exposure have equipped him with the skills necessary to address intricate spinal conditions with precision and care. Currently, he practices as Consultant Spine Surgeon at AGMC & GBP

ONE WORLD

aimed at transforming spinal care for tribal populations. He is currently pursuing a PhD in comprehensive spinal care, with a focus on understanding the unique spinal health challenges faced by tribal communities. His study encompasses 10–12 tribal villages, covering a total population of approximately 8,000 people. Through this research, he aims to analyze the nature and prevalence of spinal disorders within these communities, identifying key risk factors and patterns specific to their lifestyles and occupational hazards. In collaboration with Assam University, and under the expert guidance of Dr. Vivek and Dr. Denny John, Dr. Dhar’s research will culminate in the development of an algorithm for effective diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions in tribal populations. This data-driven approach will not only enhance patient outcomes in the North-East but will also serve as a valuable resource for TSF’s other outreach programs across India. By establishing evidence-based treatment protocols, his study has the potential to revolutionize spine care for marginalized communities nationwide.

Dr. Suman Dhar’s unwavering dedication to spinal health and community service embodies the very ethos of The Spine Foundation. Through his clinical work, research, and outreach efforts, he is paving the way for a future where quality spine care is not a privilege but a fundamental right for all. His journey is a testament to the power of medical expertise combined with compassion and a commitment to social change. As we move forward, ensuring spinal health remains a priority is essential. With collaboration, awareness, and continued medical outreach, we can work towards a future where no one suffers from untreated spinal conditions. Together, we are making a difference—one spine at a time. Hospital in Agartala, Tripura, where he is heading the spine unit in the Department of Neurosurgery.

Despite his demanding schedule, Dr. Dharhas taken on a pivotal role in expanding The Spine Foundation’s reach in the North-East region of India. Recognizing the dire need for accessible spinal healthcare in this region, he has committed himself to providing treatment to those who otherwise have no access to quality care. A significant portion of
the population in the North-East consists of tribal communities living in extreme poverty, where healthcare facilities remain scarce. Dr. Dhar’s mission is to bridge this gap by bringing specialized spine care to these remote areas, ensuring that no individual suffers due to a lack of medical attention

His work with TSF has already yielded remarkable results. In one initiative, he played a crucial role in treating tea estate workers, a community often plagued by spinal issues due to the physically demanding nature of their work. Through an innovative online OPD
system, he was able to screen 400 patients, identifying four individuals who required major surgical interventions. As a result, two patients
underwent spinal decompression procedures, while two others received nerve blocks to alleviate their pain and improve mobility. This initiative demonstrated the effectiveness of telemedicine in reaching remote populations and ensuring timely intervention for those in need. Beyond his clinical contributions, Dr. Dhar is also deeply invested in research

Early Detection of Scoliosis: How Teachers Can Make a Difference

The Spine Foundation is committed to ensuring that no child is held back by undetected spinal issues
through school screening programs, teacher training, and community outreach

SCOLIOSIS, A CONDITION characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine, often goes unnoticed in children, especially in underserved rural and tribal areas. Without timely diagnosis and intervention, scoliosis can progress, leading to postural deformities, chronic pain, and, in severe cases, breathing difficulties. Recognizing the importance of early detection, The Spine Foundation recently organized a School
Screening Program to raise awareness among students, teachers, and parents. The initiative aims to educate communities about scoliosis and the critical role teachers play in identifying early signs. Since children spend a significant portion of their day in school, teachers are in a unique position to observe changes in posture and encourage families to seek medical advice when needed.

THE ROLE OF TEACHERS IN SCOLIOSIS AWARENESS

Many parents, especially in rural and tribal regions, remain unaware of scoliosis and its potential complications. In such communities, teachers serve as key influencers who can bridge the gap between early detection and medical intervention.

Here’s how teachers can contribute:
1. Recognizing the Early Signs

The first step in scoliosis management is spotting early warning signs, which can be subtle. Teachers should look for:

Early detection allows for non-surgical interventions like bracing or physiotherapy, preventing further progression.

2. Guiding Parents Towards Medical Consultation

Once a teacher identifies potential signs of scoliosis, the next step is encouraging parents to seek medical advice. Many parents, especially in less privileged areas, may not take these signs seriously or might not have access to reliable healthcare information. Teachers can:

Early detection allows for non-surgical interventions like bracing or physiotherapy, preventing further progression.

3. Creating a Supportive School Environment

Children with scoliosis often face self-esteem issues and peer bullying due to visible postural differences. A school’s approach to inclusivity and awareness can make a huge impact on a child’s confidence and wellbeing. Teachers can:

WHY THIS MATTERS

Millions of children, particularly in low-resource areas, suffer silently from undiagnosed scoliosis. Lack of awareness leads to delayed treatment, which can result in severe spinal deformities and long-term health issues. By empowering teachers with knowledge and resources, we can create a safety net for early detection and intervention.

THE SPINE FOUNDATION’S MISSION

The Spine Foundation is committed to ensuring that no child is held back by undetected spinal issues. Through school screening programs, teacher training, and community outreach, they aim to increase awareness, provide medical support, and improve spine health in underserved regions.
Together, with teachers, parents, and
healthcare professionals, we can build a future where every child stands tall and strong—free from the limitations of untreated scoliosis. The Spine Foundation welcomes any school that would like to participate in this campaign to contact us. Our contact details are available at the bottom of this page.

Rotary & The Spine Foundation

Rotarian Els Kini on how the teamwork between Rotary and TSF is making a difference.

THE SPINE FOUNDATION struck a chord with
all of us at the Rotary Club of Mumbai SOBO, when we were introduced through one of our Rotary members, Dr. Deepon Patel. Just like within Rotary, where all professionals come together, dedicated to undertake community service on a purely voluntary basis, The Spine Foundation has been based on this very premise for over 25 years. Unlike other NGOs, it entails that any money donated goes to the project directly. In this case, spine surgeries undertaken in rural and tribal areas, free of cost to the patients.

The Spine Foundation manages to do so by connecting the dots by creating Rural Spine Care Centers (RSCCs) after a thorough needs assessment and by collaborating with government, university or charitable hospitals, to keep the costs as low as possible. Any residual costs are ultimately covered by money received from various donors, whether former patients, well-wishers and Rotary Clubs such as ours. By way of brief background, our Rotary District (covering Mumbai and Palghar) counts about 120 Rotary Clubs and jointly our District 3141 is the largest donor District globally, well above Rotary Districts in USA, Japan or Western Europe. No wonder then, that a laudable cause and extremely well-run organisation consisting of the most renowned spine surgeons in India, attracted the attention and full support of Rotary Clubs across the board

Clubs across the board. More specifically, since Rotary believes in
projects of scale, which are sustainable, with robust reporting mechanisms, and potential to grow while investing in people locally, our Club decided to raise money for a Global Grant. This
requires collaboration with Rotary Clubs from around the world, and together we raised about USD 62,000, which ultimately covered all the
costs of 10 spine camps in RSCCs in Maharashtra, conducted in the RSCCs of Ambajogai, Gadchiroli and Nandurbar. Most importantly, this Global Grant covered the spine surgeries of 146 patients, for whom there’s no looking back, as they resume their normal family and working
life.

Of importance is the fact that these rural and
tribal patients receive all the required follow-up care in terms of rehabilitation by specialised physiotherapists and routine follow-ups by the spine surgeons who routinely visit the RSCCs, while also training teams locally. As my fellow Rotarian, Pushpraj Nadar, astutely observed, a Rupee in rural India travels so much further! Speaking of which, the collaboration between TSF and Rotary, even led us to travel all the way to Burundi, officially the poorest country in the world, to undertake a life-saving scoliosis surgery on a little girl, Maïssa, who’s now grown into a confident and playful 8-year old girl.

The impactful work undertaken by The Spine Foundation caught the attention and attracted the full support of many more Rotary Clubs (RCs), from the RC Bombay Hanging Garden, to RC Bombay Bayview, RC Worli, RC Queen’s Necklace, RC Bombay, to Rotary Clubs in Singapore, Belgium, Spain and USA. So much so, that we have now all come together for a second Global Grant. Moreover, many RCs have also taken it up themselves to fund other requirements in RSCCs across India, including the funding of medical equipment, such as,

a C-Arm, microscope, electrical stimulator machine, etc. The Rotary governance is such that the leadership changes every year, at the strike of 1st July, but the key is to work as a well-oiled machine, a relay team, if you will, whereby impactful projects have the ongoing support from any Rotary Club annually, whether initially from RC Mumbai SOBO President Els, to subsequently Saurav, Rajeev and onwards to Sargam. What matters most, is the lives of the beneficiaries changed for the better, forever.

How PepMedia Transformed TSF’s Digital Presence & Impact

-By Archana Bhojraj | Executive Director at PEPMEDIA

FOR OVER 25 YEARS, The Spine Foundation (TSF) has
been a beacon of hope for individuals suffering from spinal disorders, especially in underserved rural, tribal, and urban
communities. However, despite its groundbreaking work, TSF lacked a social media presence just two years ago. That’s where PepMedia, a leading digital marketing agency, stepped in to revolutionize its outreach and awareness efforts.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Understanding the importance of digital visibility, PepMedia took charge of The Spine Foundation’s social media transformation.

Our team meticulously crafted a strategy that aligned with TSF’s mission, ensuring their work reached local communities and a global audience. We established their presence across major social media platforms, curating compelling content that educated, engaged, and inspired people to take spinal health seriously.

CAPTURING REAL IMPACT FROM GROUND ZERO

One key aspect of The Spine Foundation’s work is its spinal surgical camps held across India. The PepMedia team actively visits these camps alongside the TSF medical team to bridge the gap between digital awareness and on-ground efforts. Our content creators capture real-time stories, patient success journeys, and the
invaluable work of TSF doctors, transforming them into impactful
social media narratives These stories increase awareness and inspire action, support, and funding

ENVISIONING A WORLD WHERE SPINAL HEALTH IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE

At The Spine Foundation, the vision is clear: spinal health should be accessible to all, regardless of location or financial constraints. Spinal disorders are one of the leading causes of
disability globally, and the lack of affordable healthcare exacerbates the issue. PepMedia has helped TSF spread awareness on early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment through targeted content, infographics, educational videos, and interactive campaigns.

EXPANDING AWARENESS BEYOND MEDICAL CAMPS

While TSF’s primary focus is conducting medical camps, their work doesn’t stop there. They also invest in training local healthcare
professionals and strengthening regional healthcare
systems to ensure sustainable impact. PepMedia has played a crucial role in amplifying this message, highlighting the foundation’s long-term vision and commitment to building a legacy of better spinal health.

EXPANDING AWARENESS BEYOND MEDICAL CAMPS

We didn’t just build a digital presence for TSF; we created a movement. Through engaging content strategies, informative reels, patient testimonials, and interactive Q&A sessions, we ensured that people followed TSF’s journey and actively participated in spreading spinal health awareness. Our efforts have helped TSF gain credibility, attract partnerships, and drive donations, making their work even more impactful.

THE ROAD AHEAD: SPREADING AWARENESS BEYOND BORDERS

The Spine Foundation is committed to expanding its reach from metropolitan cities to the remotest villages. With PepMedia by its side, we aim to take their mission global, ensuring that their expertise and resources benefit communities worldwide. What started as a social media revival has now become a digital revolution. Through our strategic approach, immersive storytelling, and on-ground content creation, PepMedia has successfully elevated The Spine Foundation’s presence, helping them reach, educate, and heal thousands more than ever. As The Spine Foundation continues to transform lives, PepMedia remains committed to leveraging the power of digital media to bring spinal health to the forefront of global healthcare discussions. Together, we are making spinal health a priority, not a privilege.

Calling All Anesthetists: Join The Spine Foundation’s Mission to Transform Lives

EVERY SUCCESSFUL SURGERY has a team of dedicated professionals
working behind the scenes, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Among them, anesthetists play a pivotal role in patient care, bringing them safely into and out of unconsciousness during life-changing procedures. The Spine Foundation (TSF) recognizes the invaluable contributions of anesthetists and is calling upon passionate professionals to join its mission to bring spinal care to India’s most underserved communities.

BRIDGING THE HEALTHCARE GAP IN RURAL INDIA

For many people in tribal and rural areas, specialized spinal care is a distant dream. Without access to trained surgeons and anesthetists, conditions like spinal tuberculosis, scoliosis, and herniated discs often go untreated, leading to lifelong disability and suffering. TSF partners with India’s leading spine surgeons to offer free medical treatment and rehabilitation services in remote regions, ensuring that every patient—regardless of their economic status— receives the care they deserve. Anesthetists are the backbone of these medical camps, ensuring patient safety during complex spinal surgeries. Their expertise makes it possible for life-altering procedures to be performed in resource-limited settings.

WHY SHOULD ANESTHETISTS JOIN THE SPINE FOUNDATION?

1. Be Part of Something Bigger

Joining TSF offers anesthetists a chance to use their skills beyond the operating room. They become part of a mission-driven team, traveling to remote villages where healthcare is scarce. Every procedure performed means a child can stand upright again, a farmer can return to work, or a mother can lift her child without pain.

2. Professional Growth and Recognition

Collaborating with renowned spine surgeons provides anesthetists with invaluable experience. They work in diverse medical environments, gaining hands-on knowledge of high-risk cases, complex surgeries, and rural healthcare challenges. Each volunteer receives a certificate of recognition, honoring their dedication to improving spinal health.

3. The Joy of Making a Tangible Impact

Few experiences match the fulfillment of seeing a patient walk again after years of pain. TSF’s medical camps transform lives, and anesthetists are a crucial part of that transformation. Beyond the operating room, they educate patients and families about spinal health, post-surgical care, and pain management, leaving a lasting impact on the communities they serve.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The work of The Spine Foundation relies on dedicated professionals and generous supporters. If you are an anesthetist
looking for a meaningful opportunity, consider joining TSF’s mission. If you wish to support from afar, donations can help fund essential medical supplies, transport, and post-operative care for patients in need. Together, We Can Make a Difference The Spine Foundation is changing lives, one spine at a time. Whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, everyone has a role to play in making healthcare accessible for all. Join us today—and be part of something truly remarkable.
