From Ancient Stones to Modern Care: Restoring Strength in Bijapur
Bijapur, located in the northern part of Karnataka, is a city steeped in architectural brilliance and historical depth. Known for its majestic monuments like the Gol Gumbaz—famed for having the second-largest dome in the world—Bijapur draws heritage lovers and history enthusiasts from across the globe. But beyond its monuments lies a city that balances cultural richness with the everyday struggles of its rural and semi-urban population.
With an estimated population of around 24.37 lakh in 2025 (12.45 lakh males and 11.92 lakh females), Bijapur is primarily an agrarian society. A large portion of the population depends on agriculture and manual labour for their livelihood, often leading to chronic physical strain. Many workers experience spinal issues due to long hours of bending, lifting, and inadequate ergonomic support—problems that are rarely addressed due to a lack of access to specialized healthcare in the region. For most residents, traveling long distances is the only option for quality medical treatment, which is neither practical nor affordable.

Culturally, Bijapur is a beautiful confluence of traditions. The people speak Kannada predominantly, along with Urdu, Hindi, and Marathi in some communities. Festivals such as Eid, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Diwali are celebrated with collective joy and deep-rooted community bonding. This cultural harmony is a defining trait of the city, adding vibrance to its social fabric. The spirit of the people is resilient—built on generations of shared struggles and communal strength.
Educationally, Bijapur is home to several key institutions, including B.L.D.E.A’s V.P. Dr. P.G. Halakatti College of Engineering, SECAB College of Engineering, and Al Ameen Medical College. It also hosts the Karnataka State Women’s University, the first university in Karnataka dedicated entirely to women’s education, with 70 affiliated colleges across 12 districts. The IGNOU Bijapur Regional Centre extends educational resources to surrounding districts, including Bagalkote, Gulbarga, Bidar, and Raichur. However, despite these institutions, literacy rates and health awareness remain limited in rural belts, impacting early diagnosis and prevention of diseases—especially spinal disorders.
Healthcare in Bijapur is evolving, but rural areas remain under-resourced. Specialized spine care is practically non-existent in many parts of the district. Recognizing this critical gap, The Spine Foundation has been conducting regular spinal care camps in Bijapur to make expert services accessible to the underserved population. These camps are not just medical events—they are lifelines.

From January to December 2024, The Spine Foundation held multiple spine surgical camps at BM Patil Medical College Hospital. In January, four surgeries were successfully performed, including a case involving a seven-year-old boy with scoliosis. In April, five more complex surgeries were conducted, restoring mobility and reducing long-standing pain for several patients. The August and November camps added to this impact, with two and three successful surgeries respectively. These camps offered more than just surgeries—patients also received free consultations, diagnostic support, and education about spinal care. Additionally, local healthcare workers and medical students were trained to ensure continuity of care.
