Bhachau
Gujarat
Bhachau, located in the Kutch region of Gujarat, is a town shaped by its arid surroundings, local traditions, and strong community life. As part of the Kutch region, Bhachau serves as an important setting for healthcare initiatives aimed at bringing specialised medical services closer to people who may face difficulties accessing advanced treatment.
For communities in and around Bhachau, access to specialised spine care can be an important healthcare need. Patients experiencing persistent back pain, reduced mobility, or complex spinal conditions may require specialist evaluation and treatment. Bringing these services to local healthcare institutions creates opportunities for patients to receive care closer to their communities.
The need to extend specialised spine care to the Kutch region led The Spine Foundation to explore opportunities for a sustained presence in Bhachau. In collaboration with Shri Vagad Welfare Hospital, the foundation began developing its engagement in the region, working toward making specialised spinal treatment more accessible to local communities.

During its visits to Shri Vagad Welfare Hospital, Bhachau, The Spine Foundation’s medical team evaluated patients with spinal conditions requiring specialist attention. The foundation’s outreach included a spine surgery camp, through which patients identified as requiring surgical treatment could receive care without the same need to travel to distant centres for specialised procedures.

One of the significant developments in this initiative was the first surgical camp at Shri Vagad Welfare Hospital. During the camp, the medical team identified patients requiring surgery and successfully performed three procedures. The remaining patients identified during the earlier visits were planned for treatment in subsequent camps, supporting a continuing approach to spine care in the region.
The camp also included complex clinical cases. One patient, an elderly individual who had experienced severe pain and weakness in both legs for more than a year, underwent spinal decompression and stabilisation surgery after evaluation revealed spinal stenosis and instability. The case highlights the importance of specialist assessment and appropriate surgical intervention for patients experiencing significant mobility limitations.
Beyond surgical treatment, The Spine Foundation also supported knowledge-sharing among healthcare professionals in Bhachau. A continuing medical education session at Shri Vagad Welfare Hospital brought doctors and medical professionals together to exchange knowledge and strengthen local capacity for spine care.
The partnership between The Spine Foundation and Shri Vagad Welfare Hospital, Bhachau, reflects the importance of combining specialist expertise with local healthcare infrastructure. By bringing spine surgery camps and professional learning opportunities to the region, the initiative supports the broader goal of extending specialised spine care beyond metropolitan centres.
As The Spine Foundation continues its work in Bhachau, the focus remains on creating accessible pathways for spinal evaluation, treatment, and ongoing care. Through collaboration, medical outreach, and dedicated healthcare professionals, the foundation aims to help more patients receive the specialised care they need closer to home.
