SUCCESS STORIES
OUR 1000th SURGERY
Savita Shashikant Remje comes from the small village of Ainekher near Chiplun. From a young age, she faced hardships few can imagine. Uneducated, she took on strenuous work, cleaning yards, collecting cashew nuts, and weeding fields, doing whatever was necessary to support her family. Alongside this, she endured severe pain in her left leg that worsened with every step. Despite the agony, she continued working, eventually relying on a walking stick. After two long years, the pain left her bedridden and unable to move.
Her turning point came when her son, Sushant, who works at V.N. Desai Hospital, reached out to The Spine Foundation for help. Deeply moved by her condition, the doctors intervened without delay. Savita became the 1000th patient to receive free treatment through the Foundation, marking a life-changing moment in her journey. Today, her story stands as a powerful reminder of human resilience and a symbol of hope for many others facing similar struggles.
PEDIATRIC MIRACLE
Atharva Mangave is from Narsobawadi, a village located 50 kilometers from Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Born with a congenital chest wall defect, his condition was complex, affecting not only his spine but also his lungs, leading to frequent infections. The severity of his condition left no simple treatment option, yet Atharva faced every challenge with remarkable courage.
Acknowledging the complexity of his case, the medical team led by Dr. Abhay Nene chose an innovative treatment approach by placing growth rods in his spine. These independent rods supported both spinal alignment and lung function as Atharva grew. He visited the hospital regularly—every six months until the age of seven, and annually until he turned eleven—to ensure steady progress and continued care.
OVERCOMING PARAPLEGIA
In 2018, Neeraj Tiwari’s life changed after a tragic accident fractured his spine, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. Following surgery, he lost motor control in his lower limbs and experienced sensory loss. Due to financial constraints, he was transferred to V.N. Desai Hospital for rehabilitation.
The Spine Foundation’s Rehabilitation Team, led by Dr. Gaurish Kenkre, focused on setting small, achievable goals to rebuild his control, balance, and upper body strength. With consistent effort, Neeraj reached a major milestone—being able to sit independently and regain control over daily activities.
Through a combination of rehabilitation techniques and adaptive equipment, Neeraj progressed from standing with support to walking with minimal assistance. His muscle strength improved significantly, and today he is able to walk with minimal support.
BEATING TB SPONDYLODISCITIS & PARAPLEGIA
Reshma Khan, 22, from Kandivali, arrived at V.N. Desai Hospital in a critical condition. Neglected TB spondylodiscitis had severely compressed her spinal cord, leaving her paralysed below the waist and without bladder or bowel control. An MRI confirmed spinal tuberculosis with significant cord compression. Acting swiftly, The Spine Foundation team performed a rare and complex surgery involving spinal decompression and Hartshill fixation. Remarkably, just ten days later, Reshma was able to walk with minimal support.
Her recovery—from near paralysis to regained mobility—reflects the impact of timely expert care combined with strong determination. Reshma’s journey stands as a powerful example of the hope and transformation made possible through dedicated healthcare at The Spine Foundation.
