Where Healing Meets Hope: Serving Spinal Care to Sargur’s Heartland
Situated along the fringes of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in southern Karnataka, Sargur is a quiet town in the H.D. Kote taluk of Mysuru district—surrounded by forests, tribal hamlets, and agricultural fields. Though modest in size, Sargur holds immense cultural and ecological significance. It is home to many indigenous communities, forest-dwelling tribes, and migrant laborers who rely on farming, forestry, and manual labor to sustain their livelihoods.
in southern Karnataka, Sargur is a quiet town in the H.D.
For the rural and tribal populations of Sargur, healthcare access is limited, and specialized care is nearly nonexistent. Spine-related conditions—such as disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, stenosis, and scoliosis—are not just a matter of discomfort; they can be life-altering. Chronic pain can prevent adults from working, children from studying, and elders from living with dignity.
Despite the presence of primary health centers and NGOs, spine health remains a largely overlooked aspect of rural healthcare. Without timely diagnosis or surgical intervention, patients in Sargur are often left to live in silence—facing both physical pain and emotional isolation.

Recognizing this urgent need, The Spine Foundation (TSF) extended its mission to Sargur in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), a well-respected organization that has been working in the region for decades. With SVYM’s deep community engagement and TSF’s expertise in spinal care, this partnership brought free medical camps and advanced surgical treatment to people who had long been out of reach of such specialized care.

In February 2024, TSF conducted a dedicated spinal surgery camp at the Vivekananda Memorial Hospital in Sargur, where over 100 patients were screened and 23 underwent complex spine surgeries—free of cost. These included cases of scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, and post-traumatic spinal conditions. Each surgery represented not just a medical intervention, but a second chance at life.
Patients who once struggled to sit, walk, or lift their children regained mobility, confidence, and independence. For many, this was their first encounter with a spine specialist—an experience that changed their lives forever.
In addition to treatment, TSF’s approach emphasizes capacity building and community education. During the camp, local doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists were trained in spine assessment and post-operative care, ensuring that the benefits of the program would extend far beyond the duration of the camp.
TSF also hosted awareness sessions in Kannada, ensuring that patients and their families understood the causes, symptoms, and prevention of spinal problems. These sessions were especially impactful in tribal communities, where awareness of spine health is extremely low.
This life-changing initiative was made possible through the combined efforts of TSF’s expert doctors and volunteers, the SVYM team, and the generous support of donors and government health bodies. The funds helped cover surgical equipment, medications, transportation, patient care, and community outreach—a true example of what collaboration can achieve.
Sargur is more than just a location—it’s a story of quiet perseverance, hidden suffering, and remarkable transformation. Through our partnership with SVYM and the compassion of our medical teams, The Spine Foundation is proud to serve the people of Sargur, bringing world-class spinal care to those who need it most.
We believe healthcare is not a privilege—it’s a right. And every surgery, every consultation, and every smile we restore is a step toward an India where no one suffers needlessly because of where they were born.
