Relief in the Hills: Restoring Spinal Health in Rural Sittilingi
Sittlingi, a secluded village nestled in the scenic Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, is one of the lesser-known yet culturally rich areas in southern India. Surrounded by the lush Eastern Ghats, Sittlingi is home to the Malayali tribal community, a resilient group that has maintained its traditional way of life for generations. The village landscape is a stunning mix of forests and farmlands, offering a peaceful backdrop to the daily lives of its people.
The Malayali tribe in Sittlingi is deeply connected to the land. Farming is their primary livelihood, and their expertise in cultivating millets, grains, and native vegetables is a testament to centuries of indigenous agricultural knowledge. Life in Sittlingi may appear simple and serene, but behind this calm lies a harsh reality—limited access to education and healthcare, especially in the more remote tribal settlements.
While farming sustains the economy of Sittlingi, it also presents a significant health challenge. The physically demanding nature of agricultural work, performed without ergonomic tools or awareness of spinal posture, has led to a silent but widespread crisis: spinal disorders. Over the years, many residents have developed conditions like spinal stenosis, herniated discs, sciatica, and chronic back pain. Without timely diagnosis or medical intervention, these issues not only cause constant physical suffering but also limit the ability of villagers to continue working—affecting entire families that depend on farming.
This lack of specialized healthcare in Sittlingi made it clear that a focused medical initiative was urgently needed.
In response to the growing spinal health concerns in Sittlingi, The Spine Foundation, in partnership with the Tribal Health Initiative, began its work in the region in 2018. The collaboration marked a transformative moment for Sittlingi’s healthcare landscape. The first spine surgical camp was held in the village that same year, offering expert care that had never been accessible in the area before.
Since then, The Spine Foundation’s presence in Sittlingi has grown steadily. Through recurring spine camps and ongoing support, the foundation has provided dozens of residents with free consultations, diagnostic evaluations, physiotherapy, and, where needed, life-changing spinal surgeries. These procedures, often expensive and complex, were made possible through donations, partnerships, and the tireless dedication of healthcare professionals and volunteers.

For the people of Sittlingi, many of whom had silently endured years of pain, these interventions brought immense relief. Individuals once unable to stand or walk properly have regained mobility and confidence. Beyond just treating the symptoms, the foundation focuses on educating the local population about preventive spine care, including back pain exercises, posture correction, and lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of injury.
One of the most significant achievements of this initiative in Sittlingi is the empowerment of local health workers. These trained professionals are now able to identify early signs of spinal conditions, guide patients on proper treatment paths, and ensure that follow-up care continues after the camps conclude. This sustainable model ensures continuity in care and promotes rural healthcare development from within the community.
The partnership between The Spine Foundation and the Tribal Health Initiative is a powerful example of what can be achieved when compassion meets commitment. In a village like Sittlingi, where road access and resources are limited, the delivery of specialized healthcare services represents not just medical progress, but social transformation.
