From Coalfields to Care Camps: TSF Restores Strength in Ranchi
Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand in eastern India, is located on the scenic Chotanagpur Plateau. Rich in history, the region was once part of the Munda and Oraon tribal belts and played a notable role during India’s freedom struggle. The city’s cultural roots run deep, especially with its significant tribal population, which contributes to its unique traditions, festivals, and way of life.
People in Ranchi engage in a variety of occupations—ranging from agriculture and handicrafts to employment in government and private sectors. While the city has witnessed steady growth and urban development in recent years, many rural and tribal areas still face critical challenges. Limited access to quality education and healthcare remains a concern, especially in interior regions.
One of the common health issues affecting residents is spinal disorders. Many individuals, particularly those involved in physically demanding jobs such as farming, construction, and manual labor, suffer from chronic back pain and other spine-related problems. The lack of specialized medical care often leaves these conditions untreated, impacting the quality of life for a large section of the population.
In collaboration with The Spine Foundation, a free surgery camp was held in Ranchi on 1st November 2019. Dr. Nishant Kumar, our fellow, set up a free spine clinic at RIMS, Ranchi, where poor patients could consult him. This initiative aimed to address the prevalent spinal issues in the region, such as spinal stenosis, herniated disk, and severe back pain. The camp provided much-needed spine care to rural and tribal populations who otherwise lack access to specialized medical services.
Patients were educated on lower back pain exercises and ways to relieve lower back pain. Many suffer from chronic conditions due to the physical demands of their daily lives. Health workers from The Spine Foundation conducted workshops to teach proper lifting techniques and preventive measures to avoid back injury. The camp also highlighted the need for regular check-ups and early intervention to prevent severe conditions from worsening.

The Spine Foundation’s initiative in the region was met with overwhelming support from both local organizations and concerned individuals, highlighting a collective recognition of the urgent need for specialized healthcare in underserved communities. This spine care effort went far beyond offering short-term relief. It created meaningful change by directly addressing one of the most common and debilitating health issues affecting rural populations: chronic back pain and spinal disorders.
Through this initiative, many individuals suffering from long-ignored spinal ailments were able to access expert medical attention, some for the first time in their lives. Patients received comprehensive care, including consultations, diagnostic assessments, and guidance on long-term management. As a result, many were able to return to their daily activities—farming, caregiving, and physical labor—with significantly reduced pain and a renewed sense of mobility. These outcomes not only alleviated individual suffering but also had a ripple effect on family livelihoods and community productivity.
What made this initiative particularly impactful was its focus on sustainable rural development and long-term healthcare improvement. The camp did not operate in isolation; it was a carefully planned collaboration between The Spine Foundation and local healthcare providers, built on mutual trust and community engagement. This partnership ensured that the services were contextually relevant and that follow-up care would be possible even after the initial camp ended.
