Mobile Physiotherapy Unit (MPU)
The Mobile Physiotherapy Unit (MPU) is a groundbreaking initiative by The Spine Foundation, designed to bring free, high-quality spinal care directly to rural and underserved communities. Our goal is to ensure that even the most remote populations have access to the care they need, without the financial barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking treatment. These places have very poor access to hospitals, limited specialty treatments, and usually very expensive healthcare services. So, the MPU comes in here to fill in that gap of expertise by giving quality physiotherapeutic treatments of spinal issues, chronic pain problems, and postoperative rehabilitation, among others, without charging the patient.
Not only do we give immediate care but also empower these communities by choosing and training locals to be physiotherapy assistants. The model is sustainable and ensures that not only the short-term health care needs of rural populations are addressed but also local candidates will have the skill set to continue the care long after we leave. This way, we are investing in the future of rural healthcare, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where local providers continue to serve their communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage spinal health effectively.

How It Works:
- Local Empowerment and Comprehensive Training:
The Spine Foundation selects individuals from rural communities to undergo a thorough training program in basic physiotherapy. These candidates learn essential skills in patient assessment, treatment techniques, and the management of common spinal conditions. The training is hands-on and covers various physiotherapy treatments such as manual therapy, stretching exercises, pain management, and spinal injury prevention. Upon successful completion of the program, the local candidates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle routine physiotherapy cases in their communities. Therapy Kits for Local Candidates:
After completing the training, each local candidate receives a therapy kit from The Spine Foundation. These kits are designed to help them provide high-quality care to patients locally, including equipment for manual therapy, exercise bands, heat/cold therapy packs, and other essential tools required for effective treatment. The kits ensure that these newly trained assistants can deliver consistent, professional care without the need for external resources.Red Flag Protocol for Serious Cases:
If a trained local candidate encounters a patient with a serious or complex condition that requires further medical attention, they follow a red flag protocol. The case is immediately referred to The Spine Foundation Team, for advanced evaluation and care. This ensures that patients who need specialized treatment are promptly directed to the right care provider.Follow-Up and Monitoring:
After initial treatment, follow-up visits are conducted to monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary. Local candidates also participate in ongoing educational sessions to refine their skills and stay informed about new techniques and research in spinal health. This ensures that the quality of care remains high and that patients continue to receive appropriate support over time.

Benefits of the MPU Program:
- Free and Accessible Care:
The MPU ensures that rural communities receive free physiotherapy treatments, covering everything from spinal rehabilitation to pain management and post-surgery recovery. No one is excluded based on their financial situation, making healthcare more equitable and accessible. Local Expertise and Empowerment:
By training local candidates and equipping them with therapy kits, we foster a sense of ownership and self-sufficiency within the community. These local physiotherapy assistants are not only providing essential care but also developing valuable skills that benefit the entire community in the long term.Comprehensive, Holistic Care:
The MPU provides a wide range of services, from basic injury treatment to more advanced spinal care. Local candidates are equipped to handle day-to-day patient needs, while complex cases are referred to Dr. Gaurish Kenkre and the specialist team at The Spine Foundation.Sustainability:
One of the main goals of the MPU is to create a sustainable healthcare model for rural communities. By training local individuals and providing them with the resources they need to succeed, we ensure that the community will be able to continue receiving high-quality physiotherapy care long after the mobile unit has moved on.Access to Advanced Care:
When serious conditions arise, patients can rest assured knowing that their case will be escalated to the specialist level. The red flag system ensures that no patient goes undiagnosed or untreated when more advanced care is necessary.
A Lasting Impact on Rural Communities:
The MPU doesn’t just treat patients—it empowers entire communities. By training local individuals to handle basic physiotherapy treatments and providing them with the tools they need, The Spine Foundation is creating a self-sustaining network of healthcare providers who can continue to serve their communities for years to come. With the expert leadership of Dr. Gaurish Kenkre and the ongoing support from The Spine Foundation, rural populations now have access to top-quality care and a brighter, healthier future.
