Strengthening Spinal Health in the Heart of India
Located in the heart of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur is a city rich in cultural heritage, industrial growth, and agricultural productivity. Often referred to as the judicial capital of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur is home to the High Court of the state and boasts a thriving textile and rice industry. Yet, beyond its urban development and infrastructure lies a deeper story — one rooted in the challenges faced by its rural and tribal communities, especially when it comes to accessing quality spinal healthcare.
Like many regions in central India, the rural belts of Bilaspur district grapple with physical labor-intensive lifestyles, limited awareness of spinal health, and a shortage of specialized medical services.
In the rural and tribal regions surrounding Bilaspur, people depend heavily on agriculture, construction work, and daily wage labor. These activities involve repetitive motion, heavy lifting, bending, and poor posture — all of which put immense strain on the spinal column. Over time, many individuals begin to suffer from conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease.
However, the majority of patients dismiss these issues as ordinary aches and pains or rely on local healers and over-the-counter medication. With minimal access to orthopaedic or neurosurgical expertise, spinal problems often remain untreated until they become severe and disabling. For families living in interior areas or forest belts, reaching urban hospitals is time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes not possible.

Recognizing this silent crisis, The Spine Foundation identified Bilaspur as a key district in need of focused spinal healthcare. In collaboration with local healthcare authorities, rural doctors, and community workers, the Foundation initiated its first medical camp in Bilaspur in 2022. This marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to addressing spinal disorders among the underserved populations of the region.
The Foundation’s approach was not just about treatment — it was about reaching the unreachable, building awareness, and delivering lasting impact. The first camp saw dozens of patients from nearby villages who had lived for years with chronic pain and disability. For many, this was their first time being examined by a spine specialist.

A core aspect of The Spine Foundation’s work in Bilaspur is community awareness. At every camp and health outreach program, education plays a central role. Sessions are conducted on:
The importance of spinal health
Recognizing early signs of spine-related problems
Safe lifting and posture practices
Preventive exercises to reduce stress on the spine
These sessions are often interactive and tailored to the local context, ensuring that the message is both accessible and actionable for rural and tribal participants.
Despite the positive response to these interventions, significant challenges remain. Many patients require follow-up care or advanced diagnostic tests like MRI, which are only available in distant hospitals. The financial burden of travel and treatment often leads to delays or discontinuation of care. The lack of trained physiotherapists in interior villages also limits the reach of rehabilitation services.
To address this, The Spine Foundation is exploring the use of teleconsultation platforms, training of local physiotherapy assistants, and partnerships with district hospitals to ensure continuity of care beyond camps.
The Spine Foundation’s efforts in Bilaspur are driven by a long-term vision — one that focuses not just on treatment but on preventive, community-based care models. By empowering local healthcare workers, raising awareness, and ensuring access to early diagnosis and referral pathways, the Foundation aims to make spine care a part of the public health conversation in Bilaspur.
