Set amidst the spiritual rhythms of Shri Yogeshwari Devi Temple and the bustling agricultural life of Maharashtra’s Beed district, Ambajogai is more than a town of cultural importance—it is a living portrait of rural India. With a population of approximately 1.06 lakh as of 2025, most residents are engaged in physically strenuous labor—farming, construction, or daily-wage work. These livelihoods, though essential, often come with a hidden cost: long hours of bending, lifting, and strain that gradually lead to chronic spinal ailments, most of which go untreated.

Here, in the heart of the Marathwada region, The Spine Foundation (TSF) recognized an urgent healthcare gap—and began its mission in 2017 to bridge it with expertise, infrastructure, and compassion.

The journey began with a visionary collaboration between The Spine Foundation and Swami Ramanand Teerth (SRT) Rural Medical College—Asia’s first rural medical college. This partnership not only brought specialized spine services to a remote town but also aimed to build local capacity by training doctors and nurturing a spine-aware healthcare ecosystem.

A pivotal milestone was achieved in 2021 with the inauguration of a Modular Spine Operating Theatre (OT) at SRT Rural Medical College. Funded entirely by The Spine Foundation, this state-of-the-art surgical facility revolutionized spine care in the region. Complex procedures that once required patients to travel to far-off metros like Mumbai or Pune can now be performed locally, safely, and with precision—saving time, money, and lives.

Ambajogai

Recognizing the rising incidence of untreated spinal conditions in Ambajogai’s rural communities, The Spine Foundation began its mission not only to provide medical care, but to create lasting impact. With a focus on accessibility, education, and long-term support, TSF’s approach goes beyond just surgeries. It aims to build awareness, train local medical professionals, and create healthcare infrastructure that serves generations. This commitment has laid the foundation for a series of transformative spine camps that bring expert care directly to those who need it most.

Beyond infrastructure, TSF’s work in Ambajogai is deeply human. Through a series of dedicated surgical spine camps, the Foundation has transformed the lives of patients long burdened by pain, immobility, and despair.

  • February 9–11, 2024: 12 patients received life-changing surgeries

  • June 14–16, 2024: Another 12 patients underwent complex spinal procedures

  • November 15–17, 2024: 10 more patients found relief from conditions like herniated discs, stenosis, and degenerative spinal diseases

These camps were not just about surgery—they were about restoring livelihoods, dignity, and hope. Expert surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and volunteers worked hand-in-hand to provide end-to-end care, from diagnostics and surgery to post-op support and physiotherapy.

Ambajogai stands apart not just for its spiritual legacy, but also for its educational strength. Institutions like Yogeshwari Mahavidyalaya, Shree Yogeshwari Shikshan Sanstha, and Bhartiya Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha make it a hub for learning in the region. This academic foundation has helped amplify TSF’s outreach—through awareness sessions on posture, safe lifting techniques, and spine hygiene, especially targeted at laborers and students.

The town’s above-average literacy rate has made these efforts even more impactful, enabling better patient understanding, engagement, and long-term adoption of spinal wellness practices.
