Ranchi

Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand in eastern India, is located on the Chotanagpur Plateau.Historically, Ranchi was part of the Munda and Oraon tribal regions, playing a crucial role during the freedom struggle.

People in Ranchi have diverse occupations, including farming, handicrafts, and jobs in government and private sectors. The culture is rich, with a significant tribal population adding unique traditions and festivals. The city has seen substantial growth, but challenges remain, especially in rural areas where there is a lack of education and healthcare. Many residents suffer from spinal issues due to labor-intensive jobs and limited access to proper healthcare.

In collaboration with The Spine Foundation, a free surgery camp was held in Ranchi on 1st November 2019. Dr. Nishant Kumar, our fellow, set up a free spine clinic at RIMS, Ranchi, where poor patients could consult him. This initiative aimed to address the prevalent spinal issues in the region, such as spinal stenosis, herniated disk, and severe back pain. The camp provided much-needed spine care to rural and tribal populations who otherwise lack access to specialized medical services.

Patients were educated on lower back pain exercises and ways to relieve lower back pain. Many suffer from chronic conditions due to the physical demands of their daily lives. Health workers from The Spine Foundation conducted workshops to teach proper lifting techniques and preventive measures to avoid back injury. The camp also highlighted the need for regular check-ups and early intervention to prevent severe conditions from worsening.

The Spine Foundation's initiative received overwhelming support from organizations and individuals. This care effort not only provided immediate back pain relief but also emphasized the importance of ongoing rural development and healthcare improvements. The success of the camp highlighted the critical role of targeted healthcare interventions in addressing the specific needs of rural and tribal communities. By focusing on spinal health, the camp helped to reduce the burden of back pain and spinal disorders, enabling many to return to their daily activities with less discomfort and improved quality of life.

The collaboration between The Spine Foundation and local healthcare providers demonstrated the impact of dedicated efforts to improve spine care in underserved areas. Continued support and funding are essential to sustain these efforts and expand access to specialized medical care, ensuring that more people benefit from the services provided. The success of this camp serves as a model for future initiatives aimed at addressing specific healthcare needs in rural and tribal regions across India.
